 SANBORN FIRE INSURANCE ATLASES

These large scaled maps (1 inch = 50 feet) were produced by the Sanborn Map Company for fire insurance purposes. They show detailed building "footprints" of commerical and residential areas within close proximity to a city's central area. Most places were initially mapped in the late 19th century, but date and coverage varies.

 AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS

The collection consists of a limited number of Aerial Photographs and oblique photos for Los Angeles County and the San Fernando Valley area.

OUTSIDE REQUESTS
The procedures for viewing items such as Sanborn maps and air photographs has changed. Please consult the following guides to ascertain if your site is covered. To view materials, you must fill in a Request Form, indicating what material and years you would like to view. Please indicate when you will be coming in to view the items and then fax your request to 818.677.7840. If there is problem with your request we will contact you. If you have any questions contact us at 818.677.3465.

Since we only allow access to bound Sanborn volumes, we recommend viewing the Los Angeles Public Library's Sanborn site. They have a complete set of Sanborn maps of California online which can be viewed and copied.

There is a $10.00 per year fee to view our bound Sanborn maps and a $2.00 per photo fee to view air photographs. Sanborn maps cannot be copied. Air photos may be scanned to a zip disk that you provide or a printed copy may be made for a fee of $1.00 a piece.

Please note: a 24-hour advance notice is required for ALL appointments - NO  EXCEPTIONS. Hours - Appointments may be made Monday thru Thursday (closed Fridays) Morning appointments can be made for anytime between 9:00 and 11:00 am. Afternoon appointments can be made for anytime between 1:00 and 3:00 pm.

 U.S.G.S. TOPOGRAPHIC MAPS

The Geography Map Library is a designated depository of the United States Geological Survey. These maps show a wide variety of cartographic information including relief, rivers, lakes, hiking trails as well as roads, dams, and buildings. The collection contains all of the available Topographic Series produced by the U.S. Geological Survey:

U.S.G.S. HISTORICAL TOPOGRAPHIC MAPS

The collection also includes many U.S.G.S. historical topographic maps for various states. Scales include 1:24,000, 1:31,800, 1:25,000 and 1:250,000.

 CANADIAN TOPOGRAPHIC MAPS

The Geography Map Library is a despository for maps of Canada produced by the Natural Resources Canada / Canada Map Office. The collection includes the 1:50,000, 1:250,000, and 1:500,000 scale topographic series along with selected thematic maps.

 GENERAL AND THEMATIC MAPS

The Map Library holds a wide variety of general and thematic maps of the United States and the World. Among the many maps available in the collection are road maps of the U.S. states and cities, travel and tourist maps of foreign areas, CIA maps of regions and countries of the world, geologic and hydrologic maps of U.S. states and regions, bathymetric maps of the U.S. coastal waters, U.S. Forest Service maps showing details of the National Forests, Bureau of Land Management maps depicting land status for western states.

 ATLASES

The Map Library holds over 1,000 atlases including a number of historical atlases of western states. Of particular importance to the collection are The National Atlas of the United States of America, the Atlas of California, California Water Atlas and We The People.

 GAZETTEERS

 WALL MAPS

The Map Library has well over 900 wall maps in its collection. These may be available to students and faculty of the University for class room presentations.

 GEOGRAPHICAL REFERENCE MATERIALS 

A number of map and geographic reference materials are available in the Map Library. Some of these materials include the WorldMark Encyclopedia of Nations and the WorldMark Encyclopedia of States, Climates of the States, Wiley's World Facts and Figures, the CIA's 1991 World Factbook, human and physical geography dictionaries and glossaries, Rand McNally Marketing and Zip Code Guides, U.S. Bureau of Census data, map publishing catalogs, and other related reference and textbooks.

 NAUTICAL AND AERONAUTICAL CHARTS

The Map Library is a depository for the NIMA National Imagery and Mapping Agency. From this government agency the library receives aeronautical and hydrographic products.

 GEOGRAPHY THESES

The Department of Geography's  Master's Theses are shelved in the Map Library.

A set of 1:50,000 scale maps of Chile on color microfiche.

 PERIODICALS

The Map Library has a selected number of Geography related Periodicals.

 VIDEOS

The video collection is for faculty instructional purposes. The Map Library does have facilities for students to view videos on an individual basis.
